COMMENTS

# Q. Why is St. Thomas Aquinas facing the wrong way?
A. St. Thomas Aquinas is facing left because the decals for each side are similar, but slightly different with the knight head always facing toward the front of the helmet. I only have access to the decal for the right side.

+ Columbus Crusaders is an independent high school-level football team that is for young men who attend schools that do not offer football or are home schooled. ColumbusCrusaders.org

++ According to Zach S., Harmony is no longer in the OHSAA. They are apparently playing small college JV squads.

% Q. Why is Grove City Christian facing the wrong way?
A. Grove City Christian is facing left because the decals for each side are similar, but slightly different with the bird's head always pointing toward the front of the helmet. I only have access to the logo with the bird's beak towards the "S" in "Eagles".

*Because it accepts fifth-year students, Western Reserve Academy is not a member of the the OHSAA.

HISTORICAL HELMETS

Benedictine

1962-2003

From the Cleveland Plain Dealer, Thursday, November 21, 2002:

"Benedictine's "Flying B" helmet is celebrating its 40th anniversary this season. On Sept. 22, 1962, the helmet debuted in a 44-6 victory over Valley Forge.

"Patterned after the helmet worn by the Green Bay Packers, the Bengals' Flying B was unveiled in the third game of the season. It was designed by former head coach and athletic director Joe Rufus and assistant coach Ed James (both deceased), and the Rev. Roger W. Gries from the Class of 1954, who is now Auxiliary Bishop of Cleveland.

"The Flying B has remained unchanged. Since it was introduced, the Bengals have compiled a record of 289-127-12.

"In the mid-1950s, Benedictine became one of the first teams in the area to use numbers on its helmets. The numbers helped identify players for newspaper photographers and coaches studying films.

1 Player numbers were moved from the back of the helmet to the front for the 1997 McKinley game.

2 No decals were worn during the 1993 regular season. The "Obie" decal was added to the left side only for the playoffs.

Thanks to The Massillon Tiger Helmet Project for all of this great information!
